Terms of Service
Last updated: January 2026
1. Acceptance
By downloading, installing, or using CobaltPDF (the "Software"), or by purchasing a license key through cobaltpdf.com (the "Website"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the Software.
These Terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you (the "Licensee") and Modus Squared Limited, trading as CobaltPDF ("we", "us", "our").
2. License Grant
Subject to payment of the applicable license fee and compliance with these Terms, we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide license to:
- Install and use the Software in your own applications and services
- Include compiled versions of the Software in applications you distribute to end users
- Use the Software for commercial purposes within the scope of your purchased license tier
3. License Tiers
Licenses are sold per developer seat and per project domain as described on the Pricing page. A "developer" means one individual writing code that uses the Software. The exact scope of each tier is defined at the time of purchase. In the event of any conflict, the tier description on the Pricing page at the time of purchase prevails.
4. Restrictions
You must not:
- Redistribute the Software as a standalone library, SDK, or NuGet package
- Sublicense or resell access to the Software or your license key
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Software beyond what is permitted by applicable law
- Remove or alter any licensing mechanisms, watermarks, or attribution notices embedded in the Software
- Share your license key with developers not covered by your license tier
- Use the Software to build a product that is directly competitive with CobaltPDF as a PDF-generation library or SDK
5. Trial / Watermarked Builds
The Software may be used without a license key for evaluation purposes. Trial usage renders a watermark on output PDFs. Trial builds must not be used in production environments or for commercial output distributed to third parties.
6. License Keys
- License keys are delivered to the email address provided at checkout.
- Keep your key confidential. You are responsible for all use made under your key.
- We reserve the right to revoke a key if it is found to be in use beyond the scope of the license, or if payment is reversed or fraudulent.
- License keys do not expire and include all minor and patch releases of the major version purchased. Major version upgrades may require a new license or an upgrade fee at our discretion.
7. Updates and Support
All paid license tiers include access to updates published during the license period and email support. Support is provided on a best-efforts basis for integration questions and confirmed bugs. We do not guarantee response times or resolution of all reported issues.
The free Community tier does not include email support. Community users may raise issues on the public issue tracker.
8. Refunds
We offer a 14-day refund for license purchases where the Software cannot reasonably be made to work in your environment despite good-faith troubleshooting. To request a refund, email support@cobaltpdf.com within 14 days of purchase with a description of the issue.
Refunds are not available where the Software has been used to generate PDFs in production, or where the issue is caused by your own infrastructure, unsupported platforms, or third-party dependencies outside our control.
9. Intellectual Property
All rights, title, and interest in the Software, its source code, documentation, and branding remain with CobaltPDF. These Terms do not transfer any ownership rights. The Software is licensed, not sold.
Chromium, upon which the rendering engine is based, is distributed under the BSD license. Relevant attributions are included in the Software distribution.
10. Disclaimer of Warranties
11. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, CobaltPDF shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of profits, data, or business, arising from your use of or inability to use the Software, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
Our total aggregate liability to you for any claim arising under these Terms shall not exceed the amount you paid for the license in the 12 months preceding the claim.
12. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales, unless you are a consumer in a jurisdiction that grants you broader local rights, in which case those rights are not affected.
13. Changes to These Terms
We may revise these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date and, where the change affects existing paid licenses, notify you by email. Continued use of the Software after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
